Among the great names in the history of Persian music, one name truly stands out: AliNaghi Vaziri. He started a massive revolution in the way art, culture, & music was viewed in Iran. He was born in 1887 in a middle class family. From a young age, he attended music lessons & studied a variety of related subjects. He realised the shortcomings of the industry in Iran, & set about to rectify them.

Vaziri’s main goal was to establish a modern music society in Iran. To achieve this, he started a radical movement to transform old methods into new ones. Along the way, he was faced with resistance from the conservative sectors. They saw him as a traitor, who wanted to sell eastern traditions cheaply, only to be replaced by European styles. They were totally wrong.

AliNaghi Vaziri achieved a lot in his productive life. He founded the school of higher education in music, became the head of college of Persian music, ran the national Radio & TV channels, & taught in various schools & colleges. During his years in Tehran university, new modules were introduced to students. He specialised in fine arts, history of music, & modern techniques for creating songs. He published many books covering a variety of categories. They involved such works as How to Play the Violin, The Theoretical Persian Music, Enjoying Fine Arts, Children’s Digest, & Traditional Anthems.

Vaziri was also a pioneer in bringing new musical instruments to Iran. He strongly believed that the only way to reduce the gap with western world was to take their strong points, & combine them with traditional eastern methods. This, as it happened, was the winning formula. He worked with many famous names, & had some outstanding students. Personalities such as Khaleghi, Saba, & Banan, have a lot to thank the great master for.

After spending over 90 years to promote Persian art & music, AliNaghi Vaziri died in 1979. His name is deeply intertwined with arts & music in Iran.
